Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American musician and singer, better recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. Her work as a music as well as a film and television artist has earned her two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10. Latifah lived in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". Her cousin gave it to her when she was eight. Latifah has always been tall and tall. Standing 5'10" She was a strong forward for her high school basketball team. She sang the song"Home" from The Wiz at a high-school play. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was among the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King recorded an audition recording of Queen Latifah's song Princess of the Posse. The recording was given to host Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
